Abstract
The article describes the efforts made by the city of Amarillo, Texas to solve its traffic problem. The responsibilities for traffic engineering were consolidated into one department and a trained traffic engineer was hired to head the department. One of the first problems addressed was the modernization of the traffic signal system. Traffic signs have been standardized, street and lane marking have been accomplished, and a system of unbalanced flow streets has reduced congestion in the central business district. Other improvements include the introduction of some one-way streets in the central business district, street lighting, bus service, suburban signalized intersections, and studies for future improvements.
