Alternative transport fuels

This paper presents an overview of alternative fuels that are being trialled for the transport sector. These include fossil fuels, alcohols, renewable fuels and fuel cells. In particular it focuses on alternative fuels which have been successful in the market place and possible reasons for that success. Particular reference is made to natural gas and the experience of the Energy and Engine Research Group with compressed natural gas bus fleets in Australia. The reasons for the use of alternative fuels are discussed in terms of their emission aspect. A final personal assessment on the future use of respective alternative fuels is given.
