LIVING A MEANINGFUL LIFE IN WAYNE WANG’S LAST HOLIDAY MOVIE (2006): AN EXISTENTIALIST CRITICISM

Abstract

Existentialism is a branch of philosophy that studies path of man’s efforts to exist in the world. It is the doctrine which maintains the primary of existence over essence and which takes its start from man’s subjectivity. Existentialism focuses its study on human being. The objectives of the study are to analyze the movie based on its structural elements and based on existentialist criticism. \nIn analyzing the movie, the researcher makes uses of Kierkegaard’s Existentialist Criticism, and qualitative method. The object of the research is Georgia Byrd, the major character in Wayne Wang’s Last Holiday. Types of data and data sources are divided into two categories, primary data and secondary data. The primary data is Wayne Wang’s movie entitled Last Holiday consisting of image and note taking of the movie. The secondary data are taken from several references such as essays, encyclopedia, articles and commentaries, website about the movie, public comments, and other to support the subject matter. \nThe study comes to the following conclusions. First, based on the structural analysis, it shows that the character and characterization, plot, setting, point of view, theme, mise-en-scene, cinematography, sound, and editing are related to each other and form the unity into good quality of a movie. Second, based on the existentialist criticism, Wayne Wang raised the issue of the fact that humans now do not realize that the existence of which he has actually more than he knew.
