Structural Elements Described in Zack Snyder`s Movie Man of Steel

The movie to be analyzed in this thesis is “Man of Steel”. This movie was directed by Zack Snyder, an American filmmaker. The movie was released to the general public on June 14, 2013. The movie received mixed reviews and became a box office success, grossing over $668 million worldwide. Critics praised the film`s visuals, action sequences and musical score. Man of Steel is a movie about a journey of Superman, the most popular character in the history of comic book, to find his true purpose of existence. The main character in this movie is Clark Kent or Kal-El or also well knowingly as Superman. He has conflicts not only with his enemy, his parents and the people he tried to protect, but also himself. The conflict has changed and shaped the character of the main character itself. There are four problems that discussed in this thesis such as, general description of the main character, the plot and theme described in the movie. The researcher is using references from library and internet to support this thesis. The method that used to analyze this movie is descriptive qualitative method. Besides of that, the researcher used structural approach. This approach is suitable to use in this research in order to analyze the movie thoroughly. As the result of the study, the researcher found some general description of the main character such as: alien originated, have extraordinary abilities, orphan, an embodiment of hope, in love with Lois Lane. The main character by the name Clark Kent has a dynamic character that based on the developing of the story. He is described as a helpful, unselfish, cares, understanding, humble but once a coward and indecisive person. As the story goes, Clark Kent discover his true identity, his purpose of existence, and be the persona we all know, Superman. The movie itself has a complete plot consist of exposition, complication, climax and resolution. The theme of the movie is described in the hope of every people are destined to do great things. Based on this movie, the story takes place in a planet called Krypton and Earth. Though it wasn’t explicitly explained, the setting of time has two different timline which are the present and 33 years before the main character was born.
