Abstract

A study was made to determine the effect of OsO/sub 4/ on the radiolytic yield of Te/sup 6+/ and H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ in the gamma radiation of sodi um tellurite in acid solution. It was determined that the variation of the catalyst concentration in a ratio of 1 to 5 does not modify the radiolytic results. The catalyst permits not only the oxidation of Te/sup 4+/ by the H/sub 2/O/sub 2/, but at relatively high concentration, a better utilization of the free radicals OH and HO/sub 2/. The oxidation yield in the presence of OsO/sub 4/ is higher than the sum G(Te/sup 6+/) + G(H/sub 2/O/sub 2/) measured in its absence. OsO/ sub 4/ causes, without radiation, the stoichiometric oxidation of Te/sup 4+/ by H/ sub 2/O/sub 2/. When acid solutions of Te/sup 4+/ a re irradiated in the presence of H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ alone, the concentration of the latter increases slowly, whereas the oxidation yield is considerably reduced. In the presence of OsO/sub 4/, the H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ disappears rapidly. (J.S.R.)
