Abstract
This article examines Denmark’s new electronic travel card system that will allow transit users throughout the country to carry a single smartcard for train, bus, and metro travel. In addition, it will be the first country to introduce a smartcard with the potential to cross national borders. Roll-out of the new system begins in 2008. Benefits for transport operators are potentially a greater number of trips as well as the automatic generation of data for planning services and new initiatives.
