Abstract

The role of federal funding for key transportation projects in the Washington Metropolitan region is examined. The Transportation Planning Board (TPB) for the region has been closely tracking the various proposals for new transportation programs that could shape the federal role in the region's transportation system for years to come. The two most significant ones of these, the Statement of National Transportation Policy and the procedures for defining a highway system of national significance outlined by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), are examined closely.
