HULDA: A PROGRAM SYSTEM FOR EFFICIENT HULL DESIGN AND ANALYSIS

Abstract

HULDA (Hull Design and Analysis) is a modular integrated program package which should assist naval architects in the design of ship hulls. The HULDA system was intended to give a series of programs which would both meet the needs for structural analysis of ships being designed according to Det Norske Veritas Rules, and the shipyards during the various design stages. It is obvious that the arrangement of the program system is directly dependent on the format of the design requirements. On the other hand the format of the Rules, as well as their technical content, has to depend on the way they are used, thus the two aspects are closely linked. Hull form definition, longitudinal strength calculations, wave loads and three dimensional frame analysis are discussed here, and the Author concludes that as the HULDA system can quickly determine the hull scantlings for various alternative ship arrangements it must be considered a powerful and efficient tool for design and hull structure analysis.
