Abstract
After a general discussion on computer-aided design and its methodology, with particular reference to East German shipbuilding, the Author, of the Institute of Shipbuilding, Rostock, describes and discusses the KOTEG computerized hull-design. This design system now covers: (1) Hull geometry and N.C. preparation of drawings, using the SPAKO 221 programs. (2) Hull structure and scantlings (AUDISTA, the part of the system dealing with automated dimensioning of the steel hull), using the programs DSRK 201 and DSRK 202. (3) Seaway loads, using the programs TAUROG and MAKRA. (4) Hull statics, in which the programs used, or discussed in the paper, include LAENGSFE, the TORSION programs, the TROST programs ELPLSCH4, STABIL 1/5, and DNV's SESAM-69 system. (5) Dynamics, i.e. hull vibration excited by propeller, engine, or seaway, in which the program VERSCHWI is used and in which NV 461 will also be used in the near future. (6) Balance, the least developed part of the system, dealing with structural weights and centres of gravity, materials lists, and graphical representation of results. The modular structure of the KOTEG programs provides for the system to extend its application in the coming years. Its future development, and some related problems, are examined and discussed.
