Abstract

The author considers the environmental pollution caused by the use of deicing salts. Winter maintenance tests carried out over several years showed that neither the black or white snow clearance method is entirely satisfactory. Either there is more emphasis on protection of the environment or on road safety. The object is to achieve A reasonable use of deicing salts. Experiments were carried out on a section of main road 12 km in length, 700 M above sea level, and carrying 700 to 1000 vehicles in peak hours. (TRRL)
