Abstract

Two aspects of deregulation are discussed: 1, the results of the deregulation of interurban services; and 2, the controversy brought about by the proposal to deregulate urban services. It is concluded that: deregulation has not enabled independent operators to successfully enter a market dominated by the big transporters NBC and BR; overall NBC was the great operations winner and BR the loser. Arguments for and against the deregulation of urban services are presented but no conclusions are drawn. (TRRL)
