Abstract
Challenges in planning for parking within transit-oriented developments include costs, the large size of parking structures, and the need to replace commuter parking if surface lots are used for development. Best practices should be employed to maximize the use of parking assets: determine appropriate parking ratios; develop shared parking for multiple uses; plan parking facilities so they are fully integrated into the overall development and encourage pedestrian activity; and employ sustainable design, including renewable energy and facilities for bicyclists.
