Abstract
The shrinkage described in this paper is restricted to the strain in unstressed hardened concrete caused by moisture loss under constant temperature and relative humidity. The authors review the literature and develop a simple method for predicting the shrinkage of plain and symmetrically reinforced structural concrete during its initial drying. An equation is derived for shrinkage after a given time, expressed in terms of the initial water content, the effective section thickness, the ratio of the amount of reinforcement and the relative humidity. Other factors to account for the curing time and internal or external exposure are included in the equation. The equation has been used to produce a simple shrinkage prediction chart suitable for design office use. /TRRL/ The Norwegian Forest Research Institute has studied the
