Abstract

This paper presents a review of geographic information systems (GIS) technology and its application in planning and management of road infrastructure. Information and communications technology has developed GIS technology to manage vast amounts of geographic data by means of relational database management. The main advantage of GIS for transportation is its potential for data integration, while use of the internet allows publication and access of the data, with analysis functions that can be employed in road management. In planning, GIS can be used to create or revise traffic analysis zones. It can be employed in a pavement management system, in traffic engineering, in road safety management and bridge maintenance. The paper presents a case study of the Raigad and Aurangabad district of India where GIS is used in planning to measure accessibility of a road and to identify sections in poor repair and sections containing cross drainage structures.
