Abstract
There is an underlying rationale for this workshop on transportation energy conservation and land use that, while obvious, is worth explicit mention: 1. Transportation systems and land use patterns affect each other and are thus related. 2. Transportation energy consumption (as well as other energy consumption) is affected by urban land use patterns. 3. Land use planning can affect urban land use patterns and, consequently, transportation energy consumption. The primary focus of this paper is on the first of these propositions. (Author)
