Abstract

Modern aircraft may progress back to the propeller. A promising new hybrid design combines features of the conventional prop and the fan section of a turbofan engine. Preliminary research indicates that the new will use significantly less fuel than present turbofan engines. If problems such as excessive noise can be solved, NASA says the new prop-fan could be flying by the 1990s.
