Abstract
This article describes the system design of the COMFORT system in Munich, Germany, in which one of the most extensive Advanced Transport Telematics (ATT) trials to date is being conducted. COMFORT aims to implement an integrated transport management architecture, linking several systems within an intelligent network. It provides a test case for developing integrated urban transportation control centres. An 'intelligent' database is provided for the Strategy and Service Centre (SSC), by integrating into a Traffic Information Pool (TIP) the subsystems for: (1) motorway operations; (2) urban traffic signal control; (3) public transport; and (4) park-and-ride. The following systems are, or soon will be, linked to the TIP: (1) motorway traffic control; (2) graphics display; (3) urban traffic centre; (4) the new public transport data centre; and (5) the dynamic EURO-SCOUT information system. Information integration is based on the STRAMO tool, which is part of the SSC. NEMO provides a clear picture of the traffic flow in the road network, and its impacts, by monitoring the traffic status and deriving traffic-related information.
