Abstract

The Transportation Department of Calgary, Canada studied regional, sector, and local shopping centers to determine the trip-making characteristics of these developments, in order that the shopping centers be well located, and their impact on existing and future transportation systems be assessed. The study was extended beyond the point of determining the relative percentages of primary, undiverted linked, and diverted linked trips, and analyzed how these three trip types are distributed. The study results will provide a model by which traffic patterns associated with a shopping center proposal can be more accurately predicted. Details of the study methodology and the data analysis are given, and the results are discussed.
