Working paper based on a survey assessing the impact of computerization on employment in the motor vehicle industry in Canada and USA - outlines the positive effect of numerical control, industrial robots and flexible automation on quality standards and labour costs; forecasts increasing application of industrial robots to 1990; stresses role of trade unions in providing retraining and income security programmes for industrial workers hit by redundancy.
