The importance of driver training is emphasized in this article. To develop an effective training program, a qualified trainer is essential. A week-long program designed for driver trainers is described. The program stresses the use of objetive scoring methods to grade drivers. It also discusses carriers' specific training needs. Special cabs designed to allow several trainers to observe and critique each others' skills are described. Finishing driver training, and the functions of trainer-finishers are discussed. The refreshing of driving fundamentals with short courses, and periodic retraining to correct bad habits and reinforce commitments to driving safety are emphasized. Comments are made on truck driving simulators which attempt to reconstruct the driving atmosphere in a stationary setting.
