Abstract

A strategic objective in the urban traffic management is the increase of the transport commercial velocity and the elimination of the congested points. This could be achieved through the utilization of traffic lights control systems. The gradual decrease of the average speed of public transit vehicles, due to increased congestion, causes an increase of trip time with a related increase of unitary costs. General specifications of a modem traffic control system should be: public vehicle priority, traffic adaptivity, decentralization, reliability, modularity. The system described has been designed for the city of Turin and matches all previous specifications. In the different sections of the paper functional schemes, component design and benefits, both from traffic and energy point of view, are illustrated. (Author/TRRL)
