THE CONSEQUENCES OF AN EXPERIMENTAL SOLUTION TO A TRANSPORT PROBLEM: PRIORITY VEHICLE LANES

Abstract

Liquid petroleum fuels are expected to become increasingly expensive as supplies diminish. The effect of traffic management schemes on the overall amount of fuel consumed should therefore be considered. This paper details a method of using available information on the effect of changing travel speeds to assess the effect of a particular traffic management scheme. The overall volume of fuel consumed by vehicles using the road system associated with the Victoria road priority vehicle lane (transit lane) increased considerably after the introduction of the transit lane as a result of large increases in travel time. A need for more exhaustive data on the effects of traffic congestion on vehicle fuel consumption is indicated. /Author/TRRL/
