Abstract
This article describes rail system growth taking place in New York City and surrounding areas. Among the topics discussed are the city’s growing equipment needs, which mandated the recent order of 584 M-9 electric multiple-unit (EMU) cars for the Long Island Railroad and Metropath. The article highlights a number of planned infrastructure projects, including the opening of the $1.4 billion Fulton Center and the $8.2 billion East Side Access project. The author also describes damage sustained by the rail system as a result of Superstorm Sandy in 2012 and repair work being completed on storm-damaged subway tubes and substations.
