Abstract
This paper describes how Rail Transit has made considerable strides in the Design, Construction, and Maintenance of the Line Structures and Ancillary facilities in the last few decades. MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) is presently embarking on major expansion projects such as: Second Avenue Subway, #7 Line Extension, East Side Access (ESA-Long Island Railroad), Fulton Street Transit Center (FSTC) and South Ferry Terminal. This paper examines the current state of structural design progress in Below Ground Rail Transit structures and some of the challenges encountered in other projects. These projects are in various stages of design and construction.
