ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS OF URBAN ROAD PROVISIONS IN THE NETHERLANDS

The planning, design and construction of new roads in urban areas is no longer a matter of traffic forecasts, highway design and road construction. The socio-economic and particularly the environmental impact of a new road on the urban area has become a crucial factor in the planning process. The paper discusses several examples of new roads, in urban areas in the Netherlands. The first example is used to indicate the criteria that were taken into account in the planning and design of a motorway in the northern part of the Netherlands. The second example describes the design of an arterial road in a new development near Amsterdam. Finally, information is given on the research and development of criteria to improve the environment of existing roads in urban areas. (Author/TRRL)
