SPEED LIMITS IN NEW MEXICO

Abstract
Motorists generally ignore posted speed limits in New Mexico. Two likely reasons for this disregard are the setting of speed limits too low and the irregular, haphazard signing of speed zones. The article notes that at least 85% of the drivers travel at safe speeds. Using speed checks to determine the speeds that drivers actually travel and determining the 85 percentile speed can help set speed limits near the 85 percentile speed. Proper speed limits can accomplish worthwhile results. They can concentrate enforcement on the violators of safety; they can reduce the top speed through and area; can group traffic within a tighter speed range, and can inform people within the area of the actual speeds being traveled.
