Abstract
In this paper, several topics of importance to the fuel economy of marine machinery are discussed. Economic maintenance by main engine conversion is considered as the main energy-saving measure applicable to existing ships. The current status of main engine conversion is outlined and data from conversions in NK Class vessels are presented and discussed. The vibration problems in ships equipped with diesel engines having fewer number of cylinders are also examined and countermeasures proposed. Measures against vibration of highly elastic couplings used in medium speed diesel engines are outlined. An analysis of diesel engine failures due to the use of low grade fuel oil is then made and the appropriate countermeasures are suggested. In conclusion, the paper takes a look at some foreseeable future trends in design and maintenance precautions.
