Abstract

This paper describes measures implemented by the Austrian Board for Safety and Prevention to reduce traffic speeds, and driver reaction to the changes. Areas where speed limits were lowered were found to have more accidents. Improvements to driver information through traffic signs were effective in decreasing the mental workload of the driver. Lower speed limits were found to increase journey time. The author suggests that road environment has more effect on driving speed than imposed speed limits, and that speed could be reduced by alterations in road design.
