Abstract
This paper describes the role of public transportation during the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Also provided is an overview of the progress of the preparatory work so far. It is widely accepted that efficient and reliable transportation will be a key for successful Games, as every day more than 1.500.000 trips using all means of transportation are expected to be produced, serving the Olympic venues. The objective of the Olympic Games Organizing Committee together with the Athens Public Transportation authorities is to create a comprehensive, integrated and designated Olympic Transport network of metro, tram, bus, and suburban rail services in order to serve spectators, athletes, workforce and volunteers.
