Abstract
Research into public transport with special grants has gone on for over 10 years. Public transport must become more attractive, efficient and environmental. It can be made more attractive by introducing small buses of high service frequency and joint information centres. More efficient public transport has better resource utilisation. Environmental aspects can be tackled by improving diesel engines and developing new fuels. Adapting services to time of day and passenger groups has reduced costs and increased attractiveness. In rural areas, school buses, concessionary services and ambulances must be coordinated with other public transport to achieve a reasonable travel standard. Differentiated fares attract more custom. Buses adapted to the needs of disabled improve comfort and cut time at stops. More research is needed into traffic quality, attractiveness and customer requirements. Demand controlled traffic must be developed. Special bus lanes and railbound buses in urban traffic will enhance potential of public transport.
