SOME RESEARCH PRIORITIES IN AREA TRAFFIC CONTROL

Current activities and policies of the Brisbane City Council are discussed, particularly in the areas of the establishment of an overall area traffic controlled system with communication to a central office and the use of standard vehicle-actuated controllers as masters. Priorities for research have been considered and the most important area needing development at this time is the area of protocols and standards of communication between systems. With this established, measure of effectiveness techniques could be investigated. A number of possibilities arise and three of these will be mentioned. These involve: measurement of peak volumes, a suggested measurement of system efficiency, and a possibility for individual vehicle tracking. It is only when communications and measure of control philosophies can be effectively investigated. (TRRL)
