Abstract

Fill is a widely used material in engineering works yet its design is rarely formalized in the same manner as other aspects of construction. Fill, which is also called made ground, is covered in Eurocode 7, Pt 1, which will become the governing standard in this country in a few years. This paper discusses the engineering behaviour of fills and presents a methodology for the design of fills to comply with the requirements of Eurocode and discusses the practical implications of these requirements on design.
