Abstract
The Denton to Middleton section of the proposed M66 Manchester Outer Ring Road, MORR will be the final section of the Greater Manchester orbital motorway. The proposed motorway crosses the former Middleton Road Landfill Site (MRLS) located at and adjacent to the roundabout connecting the existing M66 and A576 in north Manchester. The area had previously been highly industrialised and ground investigation and chemical testing showed the presence of domestic, industrial and builders refuse, together with sludge bed material. Although gas monitoring showed that the tip was producing landfill gas, the level of contamination of the tip as a whole was considered to be low with isolated areas of more contaminated material. The high cost of off site disposal led to the consideration of constructing a landfill disposal facility within the highway boundary adjacent to the proposed motorway.
