Abstract
The Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP2) is a short-term research program administered by the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies in cooperation with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials and the Federal Highway Administration. This article highlights the objectives, outcomes and status of six of the more than 100 SHRP2 projects that are currently underway. The projects include: a naturalistic driving study; a web-based operations guide for linking highway capacity and community visions; the effective delivery of travel time reliability information; the identification and reduction of workforce fatigue in rapid renewal projects; management strategies for complex projects; and strategic approaches at the corridor and network levels to minimize disruption from the renewal process. Although the projects differ substantially in size and scope, each places its focus on the customers of the highway system by working to reduce congestion, improve the quality of life, and save lives.
