Abstract
The self-driven synchronous motor is particularly suitable for fitting to high-performance tractive units because it has a high power-to-weight ratio and a very wide speed range. The simplicity of the associated electronic equipment, together with its strength of construction, makes it more reliable than the direct-current motor and the asynchronous transmission system. It seemed of interest to compare in this article the capabilities of the three types of motor-direct current, synchronous and asynchronous--in a specific case: that of an SNCF 22000 type dual-current locomotive with its rating increased to 5600 kW for direct-current operation. The results of this comparison clearly show the advantages of the self-driven synchronous motor.
