Abstract

This paper identifies the safety and economic benefits of solar-powered LED lighting. In addition, new technologies being introduced through research and development are also discussed in the paper. Transit authorities today face illumination challenges at their various rural and urban stops. Providing riders with safe, well-lit stops not only enhances the rider’s comfort and experience, but also has the potential of increasing ridership overall; and therefore revenues. Crimes reported in the National Transit Database (NTD) are commonly categorized into three groups: (1) quality of life crimes, (2) property crimes, and (3) violent crimes. In any given year, there are nearly 29,000 transit crime incidents reported in the United States.
