Abstract
Across North America, transit agencies are experiencing steady ridership growth. In addition, transit agencies face challenges of enhancing bus stop amenities while maintaining and improving safety measures. The goal of many transit authorities today is to achieve a transit experience that is not only safe but also perceived to be safe. Measures are certainly taken to ensure the safe design and operation of transit vehicles, as well as to implement regular maintenance cycles. Yet, passenger safety does not stop with providing a safe means of transportation. The entire transit experience – from how safe a rider feels when walking to and from a transit stop, and while waiting at a stop – impacts their decision to use the public transit system. This paper will discuss the need for a safe travel environment in order to increase ridership among passengers.
