Abstract
This article describes an automated system that was implemented in an paratransit service in Santa Clara County, California. The system included a digital geographic database (DGD) and an automated trip scheduling system (ATSS). The DGD allowed telephone schedulers to refer to service area maps and automatically calculate distances. The ATSS software assigned clients to available vehicles, allowing for as much vehicle-sharing as possible. A third technology, automated vehicle location (AVL), was also implemented, but was not part of the evaluation process.
