Abstract
In the late 1950s, traffic congestion and parking shortages in the central business districts of many U.S. cities were emerging as major problems to urban transit use and ridership. This paper looks at the relationship between increased traffic congestion and declines in transit use and ridership, examines the demand curve for transit use, and offers suggestions to help reduce congestion and increase transit ridership, including provision of high speed transit and more attractive fare structures.
