Abstract
The author notes that mass transit is widely used in cities, and the people there depend on it. The transit vehicle uses street space more economically than private automobiles. However, private automobile use is on the increase, adding to traffic congestion in downtown areas. Traffic engineering could aid transit vehicles to use their space more efficiently. The article reports on transit traffic engineering. It covers the following topics: transit traffic engineering staff, potential accomplishments of transit traffic engineering, the use of traffic signals, parking, prohibition of left turns, one-way streets, lane markings, express and limited bus service, alternate and skip stops, fringe parking lots, off-street transit terminals, pedestrian control at intersections, bus stop locations, loading platforms for street cars, and cooperation with traffic officials.
