Abstract

The substructure of most track has three distinct components: ballast, subballast and subgrade. Each of these plays an important role in providing a stable support for the track superstructure: the rails, fasteners and ties. Understanding ballast requires knowing how it fits into the total substructure system. This is the first in a continuing series of RTS properties of ballast and their relationship to its functions; and ballast fouling.
