Abstract
This article discusses the development and growing interest in Intelligent Transportation Systems in The Netherlands to help prevent congestion, improve environmental conditions and create safer roads. Advanced driver assistance systems will likely be phased in as they become feasible: the first functions to appear will be for longitudinal control, followed by stop-and-go, and, lastly, by lateral control. Autonomous driving will become technically possible. Road traffic may come to resemble air traffic, where slot times must be reserved. Road safety, protecting the vulnerable, reducing injury risks, and crash avoidance are the ultimate goals.
