Abstract
Full automation of a metro line gives flexibility and reactivity to transport offer in a time of new urban transport lifestyles and patterns. In October 1998, line 14 was opened ans is presently the most loaded full automated line in the world. In December 2003, in the framework of its modernisation programme, the RATP decided to automate Paris Metro line 1. This line meets all the criteria for full automation while promising a good return on investment. Creation of a new automated line or automation of an existing line is an operational, technical and organisational challenge. The objective of this presentation, based on line 14 and line 1 RATP experience, is to suggest some recommendations to the railways authorities before launching such a project
