Abstract

This article first describes the Model Deployment Initiative (MDI) program, designed by the U.S. Department of Transportation to showcase the potential of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and lead the national deployment of intelligent transportation infrastructure. It then describes the four projects which received MDI awards in October 1996: Phoenix, Arizona for AZTech, an Advanced Traveler Information System ( ATIS) program; Seattle, Washington for the TimeSaver Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) project; San Antonio, Texas for the TransGuide ATMS project; and, the New York metropolitan region for the TRANSCOM Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS).
