Abstract

The 11.6-km Mont Blanc Tunnel reopened in March 2002 after being closed for 3 years following an accident and fire. The refurbishment programme was undertaken by a joint venture led by Scetauroute and Spea. The tunnel comprises a single-carriageway tunnel with one lane in each direction, a high traffic demand and limited vehicle storage space at the tunnel entrance sites. Infrastructure, intelligent transport systems, traffic management and enforcement will be used to reduce the risk of accidents. Heavy vehicles will be allowed in a single direction only on a rotating hourly basis. The response time of emergency services has been increased. New measures have been introduced to allow the protection and safe evacuation of people in the tunnel if required. Vehicle U-turn areas have been provided. The air quality in the tunnel has been improved by a new ventilation system. A new Franco-Italian company, called GEIE TMB, has been formed to operate the tunnel.
