RESEARCH AND DESIGN ENGINEERS HAVE DEVELOPED A VAST STOREHOUSE OF INFORMATION ON PERFORMANCE OF VARIOUS TYPES OF JOINTS IN PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE PAVEMENTS. THE PERFORMANCE OF SUCH JOINTS DEPENDS TO A LARGE DEGREE ON THE TYPE AND QUALITY OF THEIR CONSTRUCTION. CARELESS CONSTRUCTION PRACTICES OR INCORRECT METHODS OF CONSTRUCTION RESULTING FROM A LACK OF KNOWLEDGE OF THE JOINT FUNCTION RESULTS IN PAVEMENTS WITH BELOW STANDARD RIDING CHARACTERISTICS AND MAINTENANCE PROBLEMS.
