Abstract

Despite the many failures for rail transit in Florida, Tri-Rail, one of the most innovative and successful commuter rail initiatives of the late 20th century, is pulling in an increasing passenger load in a 72-mile West Palm Beach-Miami rail corridor purchased by the state of Florida from CSX for $264 million. In addition, Tri-Rail's neighbor and connecting carrier, Miami-Dade Transit's 22-mile elevated Metrorail is also posting ridership gains. Dedicated funding is helping both Tri-Rail and Miami Metrorail expected expansion in the next ten years.
