Abstract

In Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is on a $2.1-billion fast track to complete 21.7 km (13.5 mi) of rapid transit routes 5 years early. WMATA will realize a $600 million savings if the five fast track projects are completed on schedule. This article describes the individual projects and the construction and tunneling technology being applied.
