Abstract
The planning, designing, and building of terminal facilities that will assure safety, efficiency and user convenience requires cooperative efforts and the free and continued exchange of information among all parties concerned. This article addresses some of the over-riding issues, complex problems and conflicts in philosophy that affect airport efficiency and safety. Attention is drawn to the need for the cooperative interrelationship that must exist among government and its airport authority officials, pilots, airlines, passengers, shippers, environmentalists, and planners, designers and constructors. It is noted that the most economically feasible design the one which offers a satisfactory level of service must be based on modular approach. This, combined with decentralizeed spine concept, seems to meet best the needs of high capacity operations, thus enabling capacity to be added easily in economic increments or whenever required. This type of design is working well at Dallas/Forth Worth International Airport. Three international airports are described as illustrations of design to meet local needs. The airports are, Aryamehr International Airport in Tehran, Kimpo International Airport in Seoul, Korea, and Queen Alia International Airport in Amman, Jordan.
