SOURCES OF FEDERAL TRANSPORTATION REVENUES

The sources of transportation revenues are discussed from the perspective of both the Federal government and the States. Areas funded by the Highway Trust Fund are reviewed, as well as those funded by the Airport and Airway Development Trust Fund. The general funds of the Treasury are also available for transportation programs. Federal programs which are available for transportation range from the Federal-aid highway program to the General Revenue Sharing program. The major source of grant-in-aid programs within the Department of Transportation are the 4 operating administrations: The Federal Highway Administration, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Federal Aviation Administration and the Urban Mass Transportation Administration. The General Revenue Sharing scheme is discussed.
